Secret Garden Backyard
This space was screaming “turn me into a secret garden!” as it is tucked away and only accessible through a narrow side yard. Using drought-tolerant and native plants, this backyard will be transformed into a lush retreat layered with texture, color, and seasonal interest. The garden invites exploration through curved pathways, a vine-covered arbor, and an intimate seating area in the shade. The trees and shrub-lined fences make the space feel cozy and inviting.
Design Highlights:
Curved pathways with gravel and flagstone steppers for flow and visual rhythm
Vine-covered arbor marking the garden’s entry and offering vertical interest
Layered planting design using natives and low-water perennials for continuous bloom
Bubbling water feature located near the living room window for ambiance inside and out
Cozy seating nook tucked into the landscape to encourage lingering and reflection
Why It Works:
This design makes the most of a disconnected backyard by breaking the space into smaller garden rooms, each with its own focal point and function. The layered planting strategy adds height, softness, and movement while minimizing water use. Instead of turf, pathways and planting pockets invite slower movement and a deeper connection to the space.
