Landscape Design for Southern California Homes
Water-wise outdoor spaces designed for beauty, ecology, and everyday living.
Sage Coast Landscape Design creates climate-appropriate gardens that reflect the character of Southern California while supporting how people use their outdoor spaces.
Projects may include front yards, backyards, or full property landscapes throughout Long Beach and surrounding communities.
A Thoughtful Approach to Outdoor Space
A landscape is not a static project. It is a living system that evolves over time.
Sage Coast designs outdoor spaces that balance planting, circulation, materials, and outdoor living so the landscape feels cohesive both on day one and years into the future.
Each project is developed specifically for the Southern California climate, combining water-wise planting with thoughtful spatial design to create landscapes that are both beautiful and resilient.
The result is an outdoor space that supports how you live while contributing positively to the ecology of the place.
The Landscape Design Process
Working together typically unfolds across three phases. Each phase builds on the previous one so that decisions are made thoughtfully and the final design reflects both the site and how you want to live outdoors.
Phase 1: Form & Function Alignment
Every project begins by understanding how you want to live outdoors and how the site can support that.
During this phase, we evaluate site conditions, discuss priorities, and define how the space should function as an outdoor environment.
This establishes a clear direction for the design before concept development begins.
Phase 2: Design Development & Deliverables
Once the project direction is established, the landscape design is developed into a cohesive, buildable plan.
Planting, circulation, materials, and outdoor living spaces are designed together as an integrated system.
3D visualizations and scaled drawings communicate the layout, character, and experience of the space so the design can move confidently toward installation.
Phase 3: Design Implementation
After the design is finalized, the plans serve as a clear roadmap for installation. Contractors can work directly from the drawings to build the landscape.
During construction, a range of decisions often come up around materials, layout, and plant selection.
For clients who would like continued guidance, Design Implementation Support is available to help navigate these decisions and ensure the design is carried through as intended.
Design Deliverables
What the Design Package Includes
Each design package includes a coordinated set of drawings and tools to guide installation and communicate the full vision of the landscape.
Each component works together to create a functional and intentional outdoor space.
Custom Plant Palette
A custom interactive plant palette presented as a digital microsite.
Each plant is selected for your site and includes information on mature size, spacing, seasonal interest, and water use, providing a clear reference for installation and long-term care.
3D Landscape Visualizations
3D renderings illustrate the layout, structure, and atmosphere of the landscape.
These visuals represent the garden as it establishes over time, helping you understand how the space will feel as plants mature and the design comes together.
Scaled Planting Plan
A planting plan identifying plant locations, quantities, and recommended sizes for installation.
This plan works in coordination with the plant palette to guide placement and ensure the intended composition of the landscape is achieved.
Scaled Hardscape Layout Plan
A scaled plan showing the organization of patios, pathways, planting areas, and outdoor living spaces.
This plan includes suggested material direction, layout dimensions, and hydrozone logic to support efficient irrigation planning.
Additional elements such as lighting concepts may be incorporated depending on project scope.
Design Implementation Support
After the design is complete, many clients move forward with installation through a landscape contractor. The design plans provide a clear roadmap, and contractors are able to work directly from the drawings to build the project.
During installation, a range of decisions often come up as materials arrive and the space begins to take shape. Questions around layout adjustments, plant substitutions, and how elements relate in the field are a natural part of the process.
For clients who would like continued guidance during this phase, Sage Coast offers optional Design Implementation Support. This service helps navigate on-site decisions, coordinate with contractors as needed, and ensure the design is carried through as intended.
Start Your Landscape Design
If you’re ready to transform your outdoor space, the first step is a consultation.
We’ll walk the site together, discuss how you want to use the space, and review priorities, constraints, and overall direction. From there, I’ll outline the design process and next steps so you have a clear path forward.
