California Cottage
This Long Beach front yard transformation replaces a thirsty lawn with a vibrant mosaic of color, habitat, and structure. The clients envisioned a cheerful, layered space that would attract pollinators, manage stormwater naturally, and offer curb appeal that evolves with the seasons. They also wanted to take advantage of California’s statewide Lawn-To-Garden rebates—and we made sure the design qualified. The result is a garden that feels alive, welcoming, and deeply rooted in its place.
Design Highlights:
Groundcover and flagstone path invite movement through the garden while maintaining an informal, approachable feel.
River rock swale and sculpted berms act as stormwater retention features, encouraging infiltration and directing flow away from the home.
Planting palette of over 20 species, including pollinator favorites like yarrow, verbena, penstemon, and sage.
Feature tree: Crape Myrtle, offering vibrant summer blooms and architectural structure throughout the year.
Tiered water feature provides gentle sound and a striking focal point near the patio, surrounded by seasonal flowers and buzzing pollinators.
Cedar retaining wall adds definition at the sidewalk and allows for seasonal planting flexibility.
Why It Works:
This design blends ecological function with visual interest. A thoughtful mix of evergreen shrubs, flowering perennials, and bold succulents ensures texture and color in every season. Repeating warm coral, yellow, and purple tones creates a sense of cohesion without symmetry, while layered materials and subtle elevation shifts ground the garden in its context.
Client Takeaway:
With a rebate-eligible design and plant-forward layout, this front yard brings beauty, biodiversity, and long-term savings. It redefines what a Southern California front yard can be—inviting, efficient, and full of purpose.
